Mental Health Awareness Week – Music For Mental Wealth: Laura Westcott, Founder

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week 14-20th May, we are running a series of blogs focusing on the role of music in mental health from some of the initiatives we work closely with including the BRIT School, Nordoff Robbins, Music Support, Key4Life, Help Musicians & more.

Today we are featuring a blog from Music For Mental Wealth Founder, Laura Westcott.

 

It’s been one year since launching Music for Mental Wealth with a concert hosted by Gail Porter at Gibson Studios during #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

 

And in such a short space of time I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the way mental health is being supported by companies and spoken about in the media. But we still have some way to go in the music industry.

 

We started out with a clear goal:- to provide tried and tested methodologies focusing on the prevention of mental health issues in the music industry. By offering one-to-one coaching and group workshops based on neuroscience and cognitive behavioural psychology, we are helping musicians and industry professionals overcome anxiety, low self-esteem and develop robust and resilient mindsets to help them flourish.

 

We all know how our minds can go off piste and cause all kinds of havoc. I speak from a lot personal experience here! Which is why I am determined to focus on the massive gap in the mental health space, which is prevention. We want to help the Amy Winehouse’s of the future develop healthier mindsets to avoid addictive behavioural patterns. As hard as it may sound, it’s actually rather easy to change the way we think – maintaining a new mindset is what takes all the work!

 

We are running two-day workshops for musicians, with a gap in the middle to “buddy up” and support each other in between sessions. So far we’ve received 100% feedback from our sessions from the likes of The Royal Society of Arts, BASCA and PPL.. We are certainly making waves, and are always very grateful for any donations (via our website), so that we can support as many artists as possible!

 

We can also help at the other end of the spectrum, after someone has gone through rehab or experienced severe mental health issues and are now ready to begin the process of rebuilding their career.

 

We also collaborate with other fantastic charities such as HMUK and Music Support who offer 24 hour emergency helplines; between us we have all bases covered. Which is very positive news, compared to just a few years ago!

 

And in just one year since launching, we have also expanded our services to “non-music” companies and corporates, offering our new “Success with Less Stress” programme for managers and staff. These experiential workshops explore what it means to be a successful, productive team player and the mindset and lifestyle required to make it and sustain it.
